Fire crews called out to Lanarkshire town centre after blaze behind bookies

Emergency services were on the scene in Lanarkshire this morning to extinguish a fire in a town centre

No-one was hurt in the incident on Cambuslang Main Street.

Locals spotted smoke coming from behind the William Hill bookies yesterday just after 9am.

Three fire engines appeared on the scene to put out the blaze, though the street remained blanketed in smoke for a period of time afterwards.

One local said: “I couldn’t see exactly what had caused the fire, but there was a horrible acrid smell even after the fire services had left.”

Fire services quickly dealt with the blaze (RGR)

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service source told us: “We were alerted at 9.27am this morning (February 21) to reports of rubbish on fire behind a commercial premises on Main Street, Cambuslang.

“Operations Control mobilised three appliances to the area where crews extinguished the fire and made the area safe before leaving the scene at 9.53am.

“There were no casualties.”
