Fire breaks out on roof after family home in Aviemore struck by lightning

EMERGENCY crews were rushed to a family home in Aviemore after it caught fire following a lightning strike.

On Monday morning firefighters attended to a blaze at a property on Grampian View in the Highland town.

A total of five rescue vehicles, including a height vehicle, were at the scene with videos posted by neighbours to social media showing smoke billowing from a large hole in the property’s roof.

There were no reported casualties with local residents saying they witnessed the occupants escape, who are understood to include an adult and two children.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 10am on Monday, 12 August, to reports of a dwelling fire following a lightning strike on Grampian View, Aviemore.

“Operations control mobilised four appliances and a height vehicle, and firefighters remain on the scene.

“There were no reported casualties.”

It comes after more than 5000 lightning strikes hit the UK over the past 24 hours following a yellow weather warning from the Met Office.

A statement from the Met Office also warned of heavy rain and potential flooding throughout Scotland on Monday morning.

“Over 5000 lightning strikes have been recorded in the last 24 hours across the UK, the majority of these in northern areas.”

The weather warning has now ended.
