Fire breaks out at flagship Tiffany & Co store on New York’s Fifth Avenue

A fire broke out underneath the flagship Tiffany & Co store on New York’s Fifth Avenue on Thursday, sending smoke billowing out of the basement.

Videos posted on the Citizen app showed firefighters battling the blaze at the famous store, which reopened in April after an extensive renovation.

The Fifth Avenue store made famous by the 1961 movie Breakfast At Tiffany’s is the headquarters of the luxury retailer founded in 1837 by jeweller Charles Lewis Tiffany.

The company was acquired by LVMH in 2021.

In a statement, the New York Fire Department said that the fire had been caused by an underground transformer just before 10am.

No smoke made it into the store, they added.

Two people suffered minor injuries, officials said. Nearly 100 people were evacuated from the building on Fifth Avenue.
