PHUKET: A fire broke out at a smelting plant in Muang district on Friday afternoon. No casualties were reported.

Police received a report about 3.30pm that a loud sound, like an explosion, was heard at the privately-operated smelting factory in tambon Wichit.

Thick, black smoke was billowing into the sky at the factory, as two fire trucks were deployed to the scene. Firefighters managed to contain the blaze quickly.

According to a source, the owner of the smelting plant told police the incident was caused by a fire that suddenly erupted, not an explosion as some media outlets had reported.

Nonetheless, police and forensic officers were investigating the cause of the fire.
