Fire at former Belfast nightclub being treated as 'deliberate ignition'

The PSNI has confirmed that a fire at a former nightclub in Belfast is being treated as a 'deliberate ignition'.

Officers and the NIFRS were called to the fire at the former Plastik nightclub on Mays Meadow this afternoon with footage showing smoke billowing from the building.

The former nightclub has been derelict for some time and plans had been approved by Belfast City Council which would have seen the building demolished to make way for 154 apartments.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police attended a report of a fire at derelict premises at the Mays Meadow area of Belfast this afternoon, Tuesday 11th April.

"Colleagues from Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service also attended the fire, which is being treated as deliberate ignition. Police would appeal to anyone with any information in relation to this incident, to contact them on 101 quoting reference number 1491 11/04/23."
