Demand for birthday cakes featuring characters from Disney’s string of blockbusters this year, has helped to boost sales for bakery firm Finsbury Food Group.

The AIM-list manufacturer said it sold a bumper amount of Toy Story 4 and Avengers: Endgame cakes in the year to June 29.

Finsbury Food’s boss John Duffy said: “I am also expecting strong demand for products in the current first half thanks to movies such as The Lion King and Frozen 2 being released during the period. Long may Disney keep up this strong output.”

Full-year sales increased 3.8% to £315.3 million. It was also helped by a good performance for new vegan brioche burger buns.

Pretax profits rose to £13.6 million from £4.5 million, and the dividend increased 6.1% to 3.5p.

The company said it is working to minimise the impact of any potential difficulties from Brexit, including looking at sourcing more ingredients from UK suppliers.

Shares in Finsbury Food Group rose 5.4p to 70.9p.
