Film studio in Cardiff where top Netflix and BBC shows are made set for massive expansion

Plans to expand one of Wales' biggest film studios have been revealed. Great Point Seren Studios in Cardiff has Netflix's Havoc, popular BBC show Industry, A Discovery of Witches, and the fourth series of Sherlock among its credits.

The studios already have four stages - the smallest of which measures 15,873 sq ft, while the largest is 21,039 sq ft. Now, plans have been submitted to Cardiff Council to further expand the east Cardiff studios.

The plans include building three studio buildings, as well as parking for cars and bikes and access for pedestrians and cyclists. The brief, according to the design and access statement, is to "design cutting edge studio facilities in response to the booming demand for high quality content, combined with a shortage of large purpose-built studios."

Great Point Studios manages investments in the areas of film and television production finance, the construction and management of studio complexes in both the US and UK and venture capital, as well as providing executive production and sales and distribution services to the sector.

Formerly known as Pinewood Studio Wales, Seren Stiwdios was founded in 2015 following negotiations between the Pinewood Group and the Welsh Government, which resulted in an agreement for Pinewood to rent the site of the former Wentloog Environmental Centre.

Great Point Studios took over the lease and management of Seren Stiwdios from the Welsh Government in October 2020, with an option to purchase and expand the site. The plans to expand the site have been submitted to Cardiff Council by Arup on behalf of Great Point Studios.

'Green rooves' are proposed for the three studio buildings, which will have light grey metal cladding on the outside. The proposals also include a 'landscape masterplan', which, according to the design and access statement, will seek to protect the "valuable flora and fauna" while its habitats are "either enhanced or protected".

"All existing species-poor grasslands will be enhanced with specifically selected wildflowers that create and enhance habitat for shrill carder bee. Turves consisting notable species will be translocated into suitable places within the site," the design and access statement reads.

In addition to the plans to expand the studios, 100 parking spaces are also proposed, five of which will be accessible spaces, and 10 of which will be EV charging spaces. The number of cycle parking spaces is also set to increase from five to 16 as part of the plans.
