Filip Helander Rangers transfer exit gathers pace as Malmo chief teases 'interesting' free agent return

Malmo director of sport Daniel Andersson has hinted they are keeping tabs on Rangers defender Filip Helander with the Swedish stopper looking likely to leave Ibrox this summer.

The centre-back made the £3.5million move from Bologna back in 2019 but has been hampered by injuries throughout his time in the Scottish Premiership. The Swedish international has managed to play in only 60 games for the Light Blues and has missed more than 100 since arriving from Serie A and not played a single minute of football this term after requiring surgery on a foot injury after breaking down on the club’s pre-season training camp in Portugal.

His last appearance for Rangers came back in April 2022 in the victory over St Mirren, but in January boss Michael Beale challenged the 29-year-old to prove his fitness and earn a new deal before the end of the campaign. However, with time rapidly running out before he becomes a free agent in the summer, former club Malmo have opened the door for a return.

Andersson was put on the spot by Fotbollskanalen about reports in Sweden that they would be interested in Helander, who left the Swedes back in 2015, at the end of the campaign. He said: "We have had little contact during these years, but we'll see how the situation is. He is still quite young."

Pressed on if he thought a deal was realistic, he went on: "Like I said, we'll see. We keep in touch with all interesting old Malmo players."

Speaking during the January transfer window, Beale was keen to get Helander back on track. He stated: “Listen, if the Fil Helander I know can get himself back then he’s a big asset to Rangers. He’s had two horrible years of injuries, I’ve not been in the building when he’s had them but at 29 I don’t think Fil Helander is done."
