Rangers defender Filip Helander has moved to clear up rumours that his career could be over as his injury return timeline has been laid bare.
The Swede has not kicked a ball against St Mirren before the Scottish Premiership split las season to cap off a hellish couple of seasons with injury. The absence of the 29-year-old has been emphasised with Rangers enduring an injury crisis at centre-back as they limped towards the winter break, with Ben Davies and John Souttar on the sidelines while inexperienced Leon King was forced into the limelight.
Rumours had emerged on social media that Helander's career could be over due to the foot injury, but he is reportedly ramping up his return to the first-team picture behind the scenes following successful surgery. The towering defender, who is in the final year of his Rangers contract, is slated for a top team return from February.
A source told the Scottish Daily Express: “It has been such a frustrating time for Fil but we can now see light at the end of the tunnel. We thought that the injury had cleared up in the summer and Fil was feeling good as he took part in pre-season training.
"He went with the squad to Portugal and then in one of the sessions he felt the problem again and it was back to square one. He went back to see a specialist and it was decided to have an operation.
"The surgery has been a success and now he’s just going through the whole rehab process which will still take time. The hope is that he will be back in training in the early part of next year and then playing again in February or March.”
