Fikayo Tomori outlines role in Tammy Abraham's Chelsea departure and sets Man United challenge

Fikayo Tomori has admitted he gave Tammy Abraham 'rave reviews' of Serie A ahead of the forward's move to Roma in the summer. The former Blues forward completed a £34 million move to the Italian capital, despite being Chelsea's top goalscorer in the 2020/21 season, to link up with Jose Mourinho as he signed a five-year deal.

The transfer came just months after Tomori turned his loan to AC Milan into a permanent deal as the Rossoneri triggered the option they had and footed up a £25 million fee with the potential for another £5 million in add-ons. Outside of some injury problems, the former Blues defender has been almost ever present for Stefano Pioli's side since making the move to Italy, and Abraham appears to have adapted just as quickly.

The striker has already scored 23 goals for the Giallorossi, more than the likes of Gabriel Batistuta in his first season in the Italian capital, including 15 in 29 league appearances. Tomori felt the league could improve Abraham, and the forward appears to have settled well.

Tomori told the Guardian : “When he said Roma was on the table, I said: ‘Bro this is a good league'. I felt like it would develop his game a lot. He has scored a lot of goals this season for Roma, they’re fighting for a Champions League spot. Definitely it’s helped him and definitely I gave him rave reviews about Serie A because I enjoyed myself so much the first six months.”

While Abraham's form saw him called up to Gareth Southgate's England squad, Tomori has not featured in the Three Lions' last two camps since he was named among the substitutes against Andorra and Hungary in October. That despite his Milan side leading the way in Serie A, with the 24-year-old at the heart of defence.

However, Tomori is philosophical about his absence, knowing the competition is high with the Premier League talent such Manchester United's Harry Maguire and Arsenal's Ben White to fend off. The former Chelsea ace plans to continue producing for Milan.

He added: “There’s just so many talented players in my position already – [Harry] Maguire, [John] Stones, [Conor] Coady, [Tyrone] Mings, [Ben] White at Arsenal – and there’s a limited amount of positions.

“I just have to make sure I’m playing at a high level. And then when I do get called on, to make sure I’m ready. I have to focus on what I’m doing here at Milan first and foremost.”
