A shocked local has claimed that a fatal road accident in Fife that cost the life of a three-year-old child was a tragedy waiting to happen after a spate of near misses at a pedestrian crossing.
The tragic youngster was knocked down by a blue Nissan Micra and suffered serious injuries in the heartbreaking incident next to the Day Today shop in Townhill, near Dunfermline, this morning.
The wee girl sadly passed away a short time later at the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy.
And a shop customer who witnessed the horrific aftermath said the accident happened in a split second after the child ran out of the Day Today store at a notorious crossing point.
He said: “I arrived soon after it happened and saw a lassie giving mouth to mouth to the wee one.
“They said the little girl ran out of the shop when another customer came in and opened the door. It all happened so quickly, I don’t think anyone could have done anything about it.
“It looked like the driver of the Micra was a young lassie who maybe had her mother in the car with her. I don’t know how she’ll ever be able to drive again after what happened.”
He said the road had a terrible reputation adding: “I don’t know about this accident but there have been lots of close calls on that crossing. There’s a bad blind corner and there have been lots of near misses.
“A wee while after the police left this afternoon a young lad was nearly hit.
“Something should really be done about it.”
The road was closed while police carried out a probe into the accident.
No one else was injured during the collision.
Sergeant Stephen Quinn, of Road Policing East, said: “Our thoughts go out to the family of those involved with this tragic incident and I would ask that their privacy is respected at this time.
“Our enquiries continue into the exact circumstances surrounding the crash and we would ask that if anyone has any information that they contact officers.
“I would also ask that if anyone has any possible dashcam or CCTV footage of the area to get in touch with police.
“Police can be contacted on 101 quoting incident number 0933 of Monday, 3 August, 2020.”
