FIFA has decided to postpone a crucial decision regarding a Palestinian proposal to suspend Israel from international soccer due to the ongoing conflict with Hamas. This delay clears the path for the Israeli men's national team to participate in the Paris Olympics.
The world governing body of soccer was initially scheduled to make a decision at an extraordinary council meeting, which was set for Saturday. This decision was pending an independent legal assessment of the Palestinian proposal that was requested two months ago. The timing of this decision was critical as it was just four days before the commencement of the Olympic soccer tournament, where Israel is placed in a group alongside Japan, Mali, and Paraguay.
However, FIFA announced on Thursday that the decision-making process has been extended, citing the need for more time to ensure a thorough and comprehensive evaluation. Consequently, the final decision is now expected to be made after the conclusion of the Olympics.
FIFA disclosed that both parties involved had requested extensions to present their respective positions. The independent assessment is now slated to be shared with FIFA by August 31 at the latest. Notably, the men's Olympic final is scheduled to take place on August 9.
