FIFA confirm final decision on Cristiano Ronaldo 'goal' vs Uruguay after Adidas intervention

FIFA have confirmed that technology has proven Cristiano Ronaldo didn't score against Uruguay on Monday.

Portugal had reportedly presented evidence to FIFA that he did get on the end of Bruno Fernandes' ball into the box after 54 minutes against Uruguay, but it's since been confirmed that it did in fact elude the forward.

Ronaldo jumped up and appeared to attempt to head the ball in for his second goal of the tournament. The stadium announcer at the Lusail Iconic Stadium eventually announced Fernandes as the scorer, despite Ronaldo celebrating the goal.

As per the Mirror, even Fernandes admitted that he wasn't sure who's goal it was at the time: "I celebrated [the goal] as if it had been Cristiano's goal. It seemed to me that he had touched the ball. My aim was to cross the ball for him," he said. "We are happy with the victory regardless of who scored. The most important thing is that we achieved our aim which is to be in the next round."

Fernandes can finally celebrate now though after FIFA used technology from ball manufacturers Adidas to confirm that Ronaldo didn't touch the ball.

An official statement read: "In the match between Portugal and Uruguay, using the Connected Ball Technology housed in adidas's Al Rihla Official Match Ball, we are able to definitively show no contact on the ball from Cristiano Ronaldo for the opening goal in the game.

"No external force on the ball could be measured as shown by the lack of 'heartbeat' in our measurements. The 500Hz IMU sensor inside the ball allows us to be highly accurate in our analysis."

More importantly for both Ronaldo and Fernandes, Portugal confirmed their spot in the last 16 with their 2-0 win over Uruguay on Monday. With a lot still to play for between Brazil, Switzerland, Cameroon and Serbia in Group G, they're still waiting to find out who their opponents will be.
