FIFA are analysing a proposal to expand the 2030 World Cup.
Scotland haven't qualified for the tournament since 1998, when Craig Brown took his side to France.
The next edition of the World Cup will take place across the United States, Mexico and Canada.
FIFA have already sanctioned an increase in the number of nations competing in the multi-national 2026 tournament from 32 to 48, although, for the centenary version in 2030, we could yet see even more countries take part.

A FIFA spokesperson said: "A proposal to analyse a 64-team FIFA World Cup to celebrate the centenary of the FIFA World Cup in 2030 was spontaneously raised by a FIFA Council member in the 'miscellaneous' agenda item near the end of the FIFA Council meeting held on March 5 2025.
"The idea was acknowledged as FIFA has a duty to analyse any proposal from one of its Council members."
The news comes as Scotland prepare to kick off yet another World Cup qualifying campaign later this year.
Steve Clarke's side are up against Greece, Belarus and either Portugal or Denmark as they aim to make it to the tournament for the first time in over 25 years.
Next up, though, they face an arduous UEFA Nations League A relegation playoff tie against Greece later this month.
Winger Ben Doak, who has very much impressed in recent international breaks, will miss the two-legged match-up as Clarke ponders his latest squad.
