EA Sports has revealed the FIFA 23 cover stars, with Chelsea Women's Sam Kerr featuring with Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe.
With FIFA 23 releasing later this year, EA has shown off the title's Ultimate Edition and Standard Edition covers for the very first time, and it's a historic one. The inclusion of Chelsea's Kerr on the game's Ultimate Team cover next to Mbappe is monumental, making FIFA 23 the first FIFA game ever to feature a women's player on the cover. EA has also confirmed that FIFA fans will get their first look at FIFA 23 on July 20, 2022.
Mbappe will feature on the FIFA 23 Standard Edition, with Sam Kerr featuring on the Standard Edition in Australia and New Zealand, and as a worldwide Amazon exclusive.
"It’s an honour and a dream come true to be on the cover of FIFA 23," said Sam Kerr. “It’s been incredible to work with Kylian and the whole EA SPORTS team, and I can’t wait for fans to get their hands on a copy of the game”.
“I’m thrilled to have been picked to be on the cover of EA SPORTS FIFA for the 3rd time, and I’m even more excited to share a cover honouring women’s football with a great player like Sam Kerr,” said Kylian Mbappé.
“As a huge fan of the game, I'm excited for the final FIFA and can't wait to see you all on the pitch.”
FIFA 23 will be EA's final FIFA-branded title, following both EA and FIFA announcing back in May that their 30-year partnership was to end after the game's release. EA announced they are planning to release a brand new game named EA Sports FC in 2023, whilst FIFA also confirmed that are exploring the possibility of launching their own football simulation game.
Kerr is widely considered to be one of Australia's greatest ever players, with the Socceroos captain recently passing Tim Cahill as the country's all-time leading goalscorer. One of the best strikers in women's football, the 28-year-old has spent the previous two-and-a-half seasons with Chelsea, helping lead Emma Hayes' side to back-to-back Women's Super League titles.
In her time with Chelsea, Kerr has won the WSL golden boot two seasons on the trot whilst also ending the last two campaigns as her club's top scorer, managing a combined 60 goals in those seasons combined. FIFA 23 will see Mbappe's face on the FIFA cover for the third consecutive year, with only Lionel Messi (4), Ronaldinho (4) and Wayne Rooney (7) featuring on more FIFA covers than the Frenchman.
Like previous FIFA releases, the Ultimate Edition of FIFA will be a more expensive version of the game which offers added extras and bonuses for the player. Pre-order bonuses are yet to be confirmed by EA Sports..
