Fiancée of hockey player Adam Johnson killed in skate blade accident posts heartbreaking tribute

The fiancé of an ice hockey star who died in a freak accident which saw his throat get slashed by a skate blade has paid tribute to her “sweet angel” in a heartfelt social media post.

Nottingham Panthers player Adam Johnson, 29, suffered the cut after colliding with another athlete during a cup game at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena on Saturday. Johnson was taken to hospital but could not be saved.

His fiancée Ryan Wolfe took to Instagram on Monday morning to pay tribute to the sportsman.

She said: "My sweet, sweet angel. I'll miss you forever and love you always."

The couple are understood to have become engaged over the summer and lived together in England.

His mother and team confirmed news of his death on the weekend, prompting a wave of tributes.

Susan 'Kari' Johnson, who had for years shared footage of her son in the rink on Facebook, posted: "I lost half of my heart today. Love you always, Munch."

Among the 8,000 people watching were children, with many fans left shaken by what they had seen.

Minnesota native Johnson previously played for Pittsburgh Penguins in North America's National Hockey League. He joined the Panthers this summer to play in Britain's Elite Ice Hockey League.

Following the tragedy, the league cancelled all games on Sunday.
