Fever-Tree under fire for supplying drinks at Republican National Convention

Londoner’s Diary

The Republican National Convention has drawn a crowd of Right-wingers including Liz Truss, Russell Brand and Boris Johnson across the pond to Milwaukee. But they’re not the only great British exports at the four-day conference. Attendees have been quaffing fancy G&Ts thanks to the RNC getting supplies from posh British tonic brand Fever-Tree. This has triggered what might just be the most middle-class boycott in history, with rankled customers on social media promising to disavow their favourite mixer, and the hashtag #BoycottFeverTree trending on X.

The company is in damage control mode and has insisted it is not “sponsoring” the convention. “We are a non-political drinks brand,” a spokesperson told us. “The Democrats have a similar event in three months which we will consider too.” In future, Fever-Tree might do well to follow its own advice: “mix with the best”.

Just dance with Vance

When short-serving PM and former MP Liz Truss heard that Donald Trump’s running mate JD Vance loved to do down Britain (he called us an “Islamist state” last week), she was straight out of the traps looking for a photo-op. The pair were pictured exchanging pleasantries at the convention, with Truss describing him as “a true conservative and what America needs”.

GB Brews

Is everyone on GB News sloshed the whole time? Political commentator Stella Tsantekidou shared a picture of herself drinking a pint before she was due to appear on Jacob Rees Mogg’s nightly show. “A couple of these and then I am off,” she wrote on X. Reform leader and GB News presenter Nigel Farage has also extolled the virtues of a pre-show tipple. “I’m the only person on British TV, by the way, that doesn’t use any autocue,” he said in a speech at his 60th birthday in April. “You know why? If you’re half pissed and you read the autocue, you’ll slur your words.”
