A US music festival which Lizzo was set to headline has been mysteriously cancelled, with organisers citing ‘severe circumstances”.
The two-day music festival had been scheduled to take place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, over Labor Day weekend (September 2 to 3).
Festival organisers have assured ticketholders they will get a refund but have not given a reason for the sudden announcement.
SZA was also confirmed as a headliner with other artists including Ice Spice, Miguel and Lil Yachty among the line-up.
The move comes as About Damn Time singer Lizzo is embroiled in legal action with three of her former tour dancers.
According to the suit, Lizzo, whose real name is Melissa Jefferson, pressured one of them to touch a nude performer at a club and “called attention” to a performer’s weight gain.
The Grammy Award winner has denied the allegations, which she said she was “hurt” by.
It has also seen her lose over 200,000 followers on social media.
Made In America announced via its own social media channels that it was pulling the plug.
“Due to severe circumstances outside of production control, the 2023 Made in America festival will no longer be taking place,” the statement began.
“This decision has been difficult and has not been made lightly nor without immense deliberation. Made in America has a legacy of delivering exceptional experiences for music fans and concertgoers, and it is our commitment to always deliver a top-tier festival experience.
“We look forward to returning to Benjamin Franklin Parkway and the great city of Philadelphia in 2024. All ticket holders will be refunded at original point of purchase.”
With the exception of 2020, the annual festival has taken place on the same weekend every year since its inception in 2012 when it was headlined by founder Jay Z.
A second location was added in 2014.
The Standard has contacted a representative for Lizzo and Made In America for comment.
