Fernando Santos responds to Cristiano Ronaldo debate as Portugal dumped out World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo could not hold back the tears as his World Cup dream was wrecked with Portugal's shock exit.

Morocco became the first African country to reach the World Cup semi-finals after adding Portugal to their list of prized scalps in Qatar.

Walid Regragui only took over as Morocco boss 81 days before the tournament started, but his unfancied side are just one game away from the World Cup final.

Morocco have beaten Belgium, Spain and now Portugal, with Regragui comparing his side to boxing movie icon Rocky - played by Sylvester Stallone - for punching above their weight.

“We are the team that everyone loves in this World Cup because we’re showing the world you can succeed, even if you don’t have as much talent and money,” said Regragui.

“It’s no miracle. Many of you will say it is, especially in Europe, but we’ve beaten Belgium, Spain and Portugal without conceding a goal.

“We have made our people and our continent proud. When you watch Rocky, you want to support Rocky Balboa - we are the Rocky of the World Cup.”

Morocco keeper Bono said: “It’s hard to find the words to describe this moment. You have to pinch me, I think I’m dreaming. We’re to change the mentality, to get rid of the inferiority complex. The generation coming after us will know Moroccan players can create miracles.”

Morocco midfielder Sofyan Amrabat said: "It's really unbelievable, I'm so proud. It's like a dream - unbelievable we're in the semi-final. We're living the dream and we don't want to wake up. I have goosebumps.

"We deserve this. How we fight, how we play, with our heart for our country, for the people - it's unbelievable. Our spirit - we have injuries, three defenders came in and for how they defended, they deserve big respect.”

Ronaldo, 37, was inconsolable at the final whistle, his hopes of capping his glittering career with the World Cup now gone forever. He did not come on until early in the second-half, but Portugal coach Fernando Santos said he had no regrets at not starting him.

“No, I don’t think so, no regrets,” said Santos. “Cristiano is a great player, he came in when we thought it was necessary, so no regrets."

Morocco’s official airline lay on seven additional flights to Qatar so more fans could attend the Portugal clash and there will be plenty more put on for Wednesday’s semi-final at the Al Byat Stadium, when they will look to continue their amazing journey.

What made Morocco’s win all the more remarkable was they did so without first-choice defenders Nayef Aguerd and Noussair Mazraoui, who were ruled out through injury, then lost skipper Romain Saiss in the second-half.

Up against the country with the best defensive record in the tournament, Portugal were unable to break down Morocco’s disciplined and stubborn rearguard, who were resolute throughout, just as they have been for the entire tournament.

It was Morocco who looked the more likely to score, Yahya Attiat-Amallah lacking composure when Sofiane Boufal cut the ball back to present him with a glorious opportunity.

Morocco took the lead three minutes before the break, El-Neysri out-jumping Manchester City Ruben Dias and Diogo Costa to head the ball into the empty net.

Portugal’s response was swift, Bruno Fernandes clipping the bar with an audacious angled effort, but they lacked fluency in their play and became more anxious as the clock ticked down and their World Cup dream slipped away.

Ronaldo was introduced six minutes after the restart and had a shot saved by Bono soon after he came on. But, ultimately, he lacked any real influence and was unable to bend games to his will as he has done so many times in the past, cutting a forlorn figure at the end as he broke down.

Fernandes sent a shot just over, Joao Felix was denied by a superb save from Bono with seven minutes left, while Pepe headed wide in added time. Substitute Walid Cheddira was sent off for a second yellow card in added time, but Portugal could not make their extra man count, as Morocco made history.
