Fernando Alonso nearly flips after high-speed crash with future team-mate Lance Stroll

Fernando Alonso was left furious after a crash with his future team-mate Lance Stroll which very nearly flipped his Alpine at the United States Grand Prix.

The Spaniard will work with Stroll at Aston Martin next season, but they may have to clear the air first after this scary collision. Alonso was overtaking on the left side when the Canadian jerked suddenly in the same direction, causing the front right wheel of the Alpine to ride over the back left of the Aston.

The front two wheels of Alonso's car were sent up into the air as a result, and the veteran showed incredible car control to make sure he didn't flip over entirely, while also avoiding hitting the corner of a barrier at high speed.

After a visit to the pits for a change of front wing, Alonso was able to continue the race. Not that it stopped him being very annoyed with Stroll. "Very late move," he told his race engineer after confirming he was uninjured, not troubling to hide the disapproval in his voice.

He was backed up by former F1 world champion Damon Hill, who also criticised Stroll in a post on social media. "Wow. Another close call there for the boys. Bit of a naughty late jink I think from Stroll there. We'll see what Fernando has to say," wrote the 1996 title-winner.

The Canadian was not so lucky, though, as the crash spelt the end of his race. His Aston Martin was wheeled back into the garage while marshals raced to get the significant amount of debris off the track as quickly as possible so the race could resume.

It was the second safety car period of the race, after another incident a few laps earlier. Valtteri Bottas lost control of his Alfa Romeo and span, beaching it in the gravel and in need of mechanical help to get it out of there.

And it wasn't the first crash of the race, either. That came at the first corner on the opening lap, when pole-sitter Carlos Sainz was taken out by George Russell who locked up his front left wheel and T-boned into the side of the Ferrari.

The Brit picked up damage and was slapped with a five-second time penalty as a result. But Sainz was forced to retire from the race for the sixth time this season, as the Spaniard's rotten luck in 2022 continues to hurt his desire for one more race win before the end of the year.
