Fernandinho gives cryptic answer to question about new Man City contract

Fernandinho refused to be drawn on his Manchester City future when asked about a new contract past the end of this season.

The Brazilian, 36, was named Man of the Match in the Champions League last-16 second leg stalemate with Sporting, as City comfortably progressed given their 5-0 lead from the first leg.

Fernandinho is out of contract at the end of the season, and there is yet to be confirmation of whether he or the club have decided on a new contract. The midfielder was asked about that topic after the Sporting win, and he gave a cryptic answer as he remained coy on his future.

"I was okay. I'm so happy to play tonight and I hope I can play more minutes," he said on his performance.

And regarding a new contract, he smiled and said: "Who knows? God knows," before walking away at the end of his interview.

In Pep Guardiola's post-match interview, the manager reiterated that conversations over Fernandinho's future will take place in the summer.

"We see at the end of the season, he knows it," Guardiola explained.

"Still 2-3 months ahead. He'll sit with the club and they'll make the best decision for the club and him."

The game marked the 100th Champions League appearance of his career for Fernandinho, becoming the 44th player to reach that milestone, and he had a message for City and Shakhtar Donetsk teammates in response.

He said: "I'm so proud of that, so grateful for both teams I've played for. A great achievement for me and I thank my teammates."
