Fermanagh’s lost shops: My Fermanagh readers share their memories of stores long gone

Everyone loves a bit of nostalgia, few more so than the people of Co Fermanagh.

Over the years the county has lost many businesses that those in Enniskillen, Lisnaskea and more remember fondly.

We asked followers of MyFermanagh to jog their memories of some of those most nostalgic shops from over the years.

Here’s some of the most popular answers that we got:

Wellworths, Enniskillen

Wellworth's Enniskillen (Enniskillen Banter)

Wellworths were a staple in many towns across Northern Ireland until their demise in the late 2000s.

Many will remember the sweets they got as a child, but Wellworths sold all manner of items before the arrival of large supermarket chains to the town.

It was well known as a gathering place for the young and old in Enniskillen.

Kirkpatrick's Belleek

Tommy and Eddie Kirkpatrick (Belleek History Society)

One of those shops that had everything in it. While nowadays customers pick every item out themselves, Kirkpatrick's was known for having every individual item was fetched for you by Tommy, Harold, or one of their staff.

Tommy Kirkpatrick's retirement in 1991 saw the closure of the shop but many still have fond recollections.

Flynn’s, Kesh

Tommy and Annie Flynn of Kesh (Memories of Kesh by Maurice Lee)

Tommy and Annie Flynn were mainstays in the Co Fermanagh town of Kesh for many decades.

It was another of the one-stop shops where you could chance upon anything from freshly sliced ham to all sorts of sweets and goodies.

Many MyFermanagh followers commented on the hospitality shown by Tommy and Annie over the years.

Hanna’s Toyworld, Enniskillen

Still working to this day, Mrs Hanna's shop is now an electrical store but many will remember it fondly as the toy shop of their childhood.

Lily and her husband Norman were to go to spot in Enniskillen in the lead up to Christmas.

Island Discs, Enniskillen

One of the most popular suggestions among our followers was Island Discs, a music lover's heaven in the Diamond.

It was a place where many music fans came to browse the records and chat about their tastes.

We received hundreds of suggestions from the people of Co Fermanagh for shops from a bygone era. Here's a few which kept coming up.
