Fermanagh BrightStarz improving lives of local people with disabilities ahead of Ardhowen performance

A Co Fermanagh theatre group which caters for those with physical and learning disabilities is set to take to the stage of the Ardhowen Theatre later this month.

Fermanagh BrightStarz is a Fermanagh based community group which aims to improve the lives of people with disabilities through the arts.

The group has been on the go since 2015 but had much of their activity stalled due to the pandemic, until recently.

The BrightStarz will take their 'A Very Blues Brothers Sister Act' to the Enniskillen theatre on 24th and 25th June.

Director Nadia Stenson says the group are a pleasure to work with and it is amazing to see them grow and develop through theatre.

"The group was created as a lot of people in this area felt as if they didn't have representation to be able to perform on stage," Nadia told MyFermanagh.

"It was set up to give people that platform and we have some great volunteers who devote their time and help every single year to get our show on stage.

"We've been working very hard getting it to the level that we are, it's been building over the years and some of the cast members have really developed some acting and stage skills over that time.

"It helps people with their confidence and speech abilities - it provides them some great everyday life skills as well."

Local girl Shelley Cowan is set to take one of the leading roles in the performance as she continues to make a stunning recovery from a rare muscular condition which left her bedbound for 12 years.

It will be the group's first on stage performance in three years, since the start of the Covid 19 pandemic.

"This is our first show in three years getting on stage to do a proper show," Nadia added.

"Hopefully they can put what they have learned basically throughout the last while into the show.

"We have some great comedians, some great actors and singers and dancers so we tried to develop the show around those abilities the best we can.
