Rice is one of six changes Ferguson made to his starting lineup from Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Hibernian.
Pre-match, the caretaker boss lifted the lid on his decision to give the youngster the nod: "The quality is there," he told Rangers TV.
"He's been a bit behind in his development. We've worked hard with him.
"He's got the ability. I'm going to put my trust in him. I'm sure the Rangers fans will see why I'm putting my trust in him.
"I think he's got a bright future, but he's still got a lot to learn."
Elsewhere in the team, Ferguson notably started backup goalkeeper Liam Kelly ahead of Jack Butland.
He said: "It wasn't a knee-jerk reaction, in terms of making my decision on Saturday night, I thought long and hard about.
"I spoke with Jack, I explained my decisions behind it, he wasn't happy, if I'm being honest with you, but I don't mind that.
"He understood I had to make a decision. I've went with Liam. Since I have come in Liam has trained really well.
"People need to remember, I still believe in Jack, Jack is still a top goalkeeper. I get on really well with him but I have to make decisions."
