Fenwick Christmas window: Author behind Clarice Bean theme meets children in Newcastle to celebrate

The author behind the theme of this year's Fenwick Christmas window has shared her delight with children in Newcastle.

Lauren Child, who wrote the Clarice Bean book series, met youngsters at Seven Stories to celebrate the reveal of the festive window which features her festive story, 'Clarice Bean: Think Like an Elf.'

Fenwick's Christmas window was unveiled on Sunday, November 6, and stars the much-loved character Clarice Bean in a new festive story across eight windows.

Pupils from seven North East schools were invited to meet the author on Monday, November 7, and hear about her work. Youngsters also took part in a question and each received an elf hat as seen in the book, along with a copy of the Fenwick special edition of 'Clarice Bean: Think Like an Elf.'

Author Lauren Child said: “I’ve known and worked with Seven Stories for many years so it is wonderful to be back in Newcastle for the Fenwick Christmas window reveal and to talk to primary school children and readers about Clarice and my work.”

Wendy Elliott, CEO of Seven Stories, said: “What a wonderful way to celebrate reading for pleasure - not only with an exciting free event with Lauren herself here at Seven Stories - but also with a beautiful depiction of her Christmas story in the Fenwick’s Christmas window for all to see for free.

"Accessibility to stories is at the heart of everything we do here and we are so grateful for Lauren’s support, and thrilled with Fenwick’s vision to bring this irresistible Christmas story to life for families this year.”

A total of 60 pupils attended the event, sponsored by Fenwick. Mia Fenwick, CMO at Fenwick, said: “Fenwick has been sharing inspirational festive stories with local children through our much-loved Christmas Window display for over 50 years. This year we are delighted to be taking it a step further by working with the award-winning Lauren Child and Seven Stories to support their vital educational work and bring the magic of this year’s Christmas window reveal to more school children in Newcastle.”

Fenwick’s Christmas Window on Northumberland Street can be viewed until early January 2023.
