A woman has reportedly lost both of her hands after she was attacked by a shark off a Caribbean beach.

The Canadian woman, named locally as Nathalie Ross, was attacked in shallow waters off Thompson’s Cove Beach on the Turks and Caicos Islands on February 7.

The 55-year-old had been “attempting to engage” with the animal and take a picture of it, local authorities said.

Witnesses claimed she was with her family at the time and her husband tried to stop the shark from biting her again.

Photographs, first published by MailOnline, appeared to show Ms Ross lying on the beach as her husband and others tried to stop the bleeding.

Magnetic Media reported the woman lost both her hands and was also bitten on the thigh. She was airlifted to hospital and is expected to survive the attack.

According to the Turks & Caicos Islands Government, “the shark was estimated to be approximately 6ft in length, however the species is yet to be confirmed,” Miami Herald reported.

Members of the public have been advised to stay out of the ocean until the all-clear is issued.
