Female pedestrian dies after being hit by two cars in Holtze, outside Darwin

A pedestrian has died after being hit by multiple cars on the outskirts of Darwin last night.

In a statement released this morning, Northern Territory Police said they had received a report about 7:30pm that a woman had been struck by a vehicle on Thorngate Road in Holtze.

"Immediately after the first collision, the woman was struck again by another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction," the statement said.

Police said both drivers stopped and emergency services attended, but the woman was declared dead at the scene.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said the scene had been "particularly confronting", with the victim having to be recovered "from underneath a large vehicle".

The road was closed last night and traffic diversions put in place as a crime scene was established, but was reopened this morning.

Police are still working to determine the woman's identity, with forensic work underway to identify her through fingerprints and DNA.

The Major Crash Unit is now investigating "to determine how and why this crash occurred".

Both drivers involved tested negative for alcohol and drugs.

Police are urging anyone who was on Thorngate Road before 7:30pm, who saw the pedestrian or who has any information that can assist to contact them.
