Displaced residents in Los Angeles County now have the opportunity to find temporary housing assistance through FEMA's transitional shelter assistance program. This initiative was activated following an order by California Governor Gavin Newsom, as announced by FEMA Administrator Robert Fenton, Jr. during a recent news conference.
The program, which officially opened on Tuesday, aims to provide fire survivors with accommodation at participating hotels to bridge the housing gap until they secure a short or long-term housing solution. FEMA covers the costs of the hotel room, taxes, and non-refundable pet fees, although additional services such as laundry and parking are not included.
Individuals with insurance who are still determining their policy coverage may also be eligible for this program, according to Fenton. FEMA is proactively identifying and contacting fire survivors who have registered with the agency and are eligible for the transitional shelter assistance. Eligible individuals will be notified through phone, text, or email without the need for a formal request.
Fenton highlighted that FEMA has received approximately 53,000 registrations for its Individual Assistance Program, with nearly $12 million already disbursed to support those affected by the recent events. The agency continues to work diligently to provide aid and resources to those in need during this challenging time.
