Féile an Phobail: Watch as Springhill community come out in force for hilarious 'Wheelie Bin Race'

A West Belfast community has kicked off their Féile an Phobail celebrations with a unique competition. On Friday, the Springhill Community Funday, organised by Springhill Community House and Springhill residents, saw six men battle it out in a 'Wheelie Bin Race'.

Springhill was the original location for Féile an Phobail concerts in the 1990s and has a vibrant community structure that got together to create a fun day out for residents ahead of the festival starting on August 4.

An aerial video of the race has already been watched by over 100,000 people on social media with the day events being attended by over 3000 people from the community.

Ciaran Cahill from Springhill Community House said: "Springhill Community House is celebrating 50 years of delivering much needed education and health services at the heart of the Community. To celebrate our achievements and thank our community we held a Back to the Future Fun Day featuring some 1970's festival favourites including football, cribby, rounders, 50+ tea party, bingo, bouncy castles and a wheelie bin race.

"The highlight of the day was the Wheelie Bin race which saw six competitors run the gauntlet of flour throwers and water bombers who lined Springhill Avenue, with local resident Seamus Bracken gaining victory. We would like to thank all those who took part in the events who each received a commemorative Springhill Community House 50th Anniversary medal.

"We would also like to thank all those community activists, Springhill residents group, Upper Springfield resource Centre and Cumann Spoirt an Phobail who made the events possible and we look forward to continuing our work for the next 50 years."

Féile an Phobail Director Kevin Gamble praised the Springhill community for the fantastic series of events which they organised.

He said: "I watched the aerial footage of the Wheelie Bin race down Springhill Avenue, and it was fantastic. To see the entire community taking part in events which bring together young and old, families, entire streets, to celebrate and have fun together is amazing to see.

"The Springhill community has always been to the forefront of organising community events, and was the now legendary venue for Féile an Phobail concerts back in the 1990s. It is a place apart, and the organisers from Springhill Community House to every community activist and local resident who took part deserve the highest of praise for giving people a day to remember.

"Community spirit is at the heart of what Féile is about, and Springhill has that in spades."
