Feeder Schools 2022: Southside dominates list with Dublin 4 school leading the way

The educational divide between affluent and less affluent areas in Dublin has been illustrated "in stark terms" by the 2022 Feeder Schools list.

The Irish Times annual feeder school lists was revealed today, and students attending schools in Dublin 6 (96 per cent), Dublin 2 (94 per cent), Dublin 6W, Dublin 4 and Dublin 14 (93 per cent) — all in south Dublin — have the highest chance of securing a college place. This compares with much lower third-level progression rates in Dublin 11 and Dublin 24 (both 48 per cent), as well as Dublin 12 (49 per cent).

The divide is also stark when the figures are broken down into those who secured places in traditional universities. In Dublin 4 and 6, more than two thirds went on to a university, compared with 23 and 21 per cent in Dublin 11 and 12 respectively.

Following a return to traditional Leaving Cert exams, the overall proportion of students from disadvantaged (Deis) schools who secured places in higher education has dropped again. The predicted grades during the pandemic years were widely seen as helping to close inequality and class gaps.

Overall, a large majority (79 per cent) of school leavers across all post-primary schools progressed to higher education in 2022, according to this year’s data. The data also shows that students attending fee-charging schools (98 per cent) have higher college participation rates compared to free post-primary schools (81 per cent) and Deis schools (60 per cent).
