Federal Labor staffer resigns, NT opposition uses Question Time to make allegations of cocaine use

A staff member in the office of federal Labor politician Luke Gosling has resigned amid allegations of illegal drug use.

A spokesperson for Mr Gosling confirmed the staffer's resignation on Tuesday before the Northern Territory opposition used it to renew questions in NT Parliament about the culture within Territory Labor.

The spokesperson said the Member for Solomon only became aware of the alleged incident on Monday.

"The alleged incident took place almost 18 months ago, and predates the part-time staffer's employment in the Solomon electorate office," the spokesperson said.

"The Member for Solomon was made aware of the alleged incident yesterday, and the staff member has since resigned."

In NT Parliament on Tuesday, Deputy Opposition Leader Gerard Maley used Question Time to refer to a video that he said had emerged showing the staffer appearing to snort white powder.

He noted the staffer was also the president of the Labor party's local youth chapter, NT Young Labor, and he alleged there appeared to be a "systemic cocaine culture" within the Labor Party.

"What did you know about this possible illegal activity and why haven't you publicly condemned this bad behaviour?" he asked.

"I don't condone illegal behaviour of any kind, but let's be clear: I understand this happened 18 months ago at an 18th birthday party and by someone who was not employed by the Territory government in any respect," Chief Minister Michael Gunner replied.

Mr Gunner accused the opposition of being "consumed by something that happened 18 months ago" and said his government was focused on the economy and pandemic.

Territory Labor and NT Young Labor have been contacted for comment.
