Breaking legal news involving former President Donald Trump has emerged in a different case, the classified documents case in Florida. A federal judge has recently rejected a request from special counsel Jack Smith for a gag order against Trump.
Prosecutors from the special counsel's office at the Justice Department sought to limit Trump's speech regarding law enforcement officers involved in the August 2022 search at Mar-a-Lago. However, Judge Eileen Cannon ruled against imposing restrictions on Trump's speech, citing procedural issues.
The prosecutors approached Judge Cannon on a Friday evening before the holiday week, expressing concerns about Trump's misleading statements regarding FBI policies on the use of deadly force during the resort search. Despite their intentions to safeguard the proceedings and their officers, the judge found fault with the rushed nature of the request.
Trump's legal team argued that they were not given sufficient time to respond and collaborate with the prosecutors on the matter. Judge Cannon sided with Trump's team, criticizing the Justice Department's approach as unprofessional and lacking courtesy. She emphasized the importance of providing ample time for the defense to engage in meaningful discussions.
While the prosecutors have the option to revisit the request for a gag order in the future, Judge Cannon's current ruling stands, denying any limitations on Trump's speech in the Florida case.
