Federal Judge Dismisses Capitol Riot Charges, Warns Against Glorifying Rioters

Donald Trump looks focused.

On Wednesday, Federal Judge Beryl Howell made a significant statement regarding the January 6, 2021, Capitol rioters, referring to them as 'poor losers.' She cautioned against glorifying these individuals, warning that it could pave the way for future lawlessness. Judge Howell, who has presided over numerous Capitol riot cases, dismissed charges against two defendants in one such case.

Judge Howell challenged former President Donald Trump's reasoning for granting clemency to individuals involved in the Capitol siege. She highlighted that no 'national injustice' occurred during the events of January 6, and she rejected the notion of election fraud influencing the 2020 presidential election outcome. Howell emphasized that glorifying individuals who disrupt constitutionally mandated proceedings undermines the rule of law and sets a dangerous precedent for potential future misconduct.

While agreeing to dismiss a pending Capitol riot case due to the Justice Department's decision not to prosecute it, Judge Howell declined to dismiss the case against Proud Boys affiliates Nicholas DeCarlo and Nicholas Ochs 'with prejudice.' This decision leaves open the possibility of the case being brought forward again in the future.

Judge Howell's stance reflects her disapproval of Trump's move to terminate approximately 300 pending cases against January 6 rioters. Her actions underscore the importance of upholding the rule of law and discouraging behavior that undermines the democratic process.
