A federal judge overseeing Hunter Biden's tax case has criticized President Joe Biden for attempting to 'rewrite history' in his reasoning for pardoning his son. District Judge Mark Scarsi expressed his concerns in a five-page order, stating that certain statements made by the President in the pardon announcement did not align with the case record.
Scarsi specifically took issue with President Biden's assertion that Hunter Biden's tax issues were solely due to his struggles with alcohol and drug addiction. The judge highlighted that Hunter Biden had admitted to not paying his substantial tax debts even after recovering from his addictions and having the financial means to do so.
In his order, Scarsi emphasized that while the President has the authority to grant pardons, he does not have the power to alter factual events. He pointed out that the Constitution does not grant the President the ability to rewrite history.
President Biden's statement also claimed that his son was unfairly targeted for prosecution due to political reasons. However, Scarsi noted that Justice Department officials, including the attorney general, oversaw the case and allowed it to proceed. The judge rejected the argument of selective prosecution, which had been previously raised by Hunter Biden in court.
Scarsi highlighted that the President's assertion that 'no reasonable person' would view the prosecution as politically motivated implies that federal civil servants involved in the case are unreasonable. The judge's order raises questions about the President's characterization of the legal proceedings surrounding Hunter Biden's tax case.
