Currently, a federal judge is deliberating on whether to dismiss certain criminal charges against former President Donald Trump and his co-defendants. The charges involve the alleged retention of highly classified documents post his presidency. Recently unsealed court documents revealed that Trump's attorneys discovered additional documents in his bedroom months after an FBI raid at Mar-a-Lago. New footage from the Department of Justice shows a Trump aide handling moving boxes shortly before Trump's lawyers searched his Florida residence.
At the federal court, Judge Eileen Cannon is presiding over hearings on motions filed by Trump and his co-defendants to dismiss the charges. One of the co-defendants, a former aide of Trump, is seeking to have obstruction charges dropped, claiming vindictive prosecution. Trump and the other co-defendants are requesting the suppression of evidence, citing alleged government errors and seeking to exclude testimony from a former lawyer, Evan Corcoran, who was subpoenaed to provide classified documents stored at Mar-a-Lago.
Prior to the hearing, extensive documents were released, shedding light on the internal disputes and legal battles. Notably, the documents revealed images of the Trump aide moving boxes post-subpoena, allegedly to conceal documents. The government also presented evidence that classified documents were found in Trump's bedroom and office at Mar-a-Lago months after the FBI search.
Judge Beryl Howell justified compelling Evan Corcoran to testify against his client, stating that there was sufficient evidence indicating Trump used Corcoran to obstruct the investigation. The ongoing hearing may result in a new trial date being set by Judge Eileen Cannon.
