A federal judge has issued a nationwide preliminary injunction blocking President Donald Trump's executive order that aimed to end birthright citizenship. The judge criticized Trump for attempting to bypass the rule of law and play 'policy games' with the Constitution.
During a hearing in Seattle, US District Judge John Coughenour emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and stated that the government cannot manipulate the Constitution for political or personal gain. He asserted that any changes to birthright citizenship would require an amendment to the Constitution.

This latest ruling expands on a previous temporary block issued by Judge Coughenour shortly after Trump signed the executive order. Another federal judge in Maryland also issued a preliminary injunction against the order.
The judges' decisions represent a significant legal setback for Trump's efforts to end birthright citizenship, which has faced legal challenges from various states and private plaintiffs.
The rulings are expected to be appealed to federal appeals courts in San Francisco and Richmond, with the possibility of the issue eventually reaching the Supreme Court for review.
