A federal judge overseeing the election subversion case against former President Donald Trump has granted an extension requested by special counsel Jack Smith. The next hearing in the case has been rescheduled to September 5, as per the latest order from US District Judge Tanya Chutkan.
The original deadline for a status report that was supposed to be filed on Friday has now been moved to August 30 to accommodate the extension.
Smith's legal team sought the extension on Thursday, citing the need to further evaluate the Supreme Court's recent immunity ruling, which has introduced new legal precedent. This led to the request to delay both the filing deadline and the hearing, which was initially set for August 16.
Notably, former President Trump did not oppose the decision to postpone the proceedings, indicating a willingness to allow the legal process to unfold as necessary.
