A federal complaint unsealed on Wednesday shed light on a notebook found in the possession of Luigi Mangione, providing new insights into his alleged motives and planning. The notebook, according to authorities, contained handwritten pages expressing hostility towards the health insurance industry and wealthy executives.
One entry dated August 15 indicated that Mangione believed that 'the details are finally coming together,' and expressed a sense of satisfaction in procrastinating as it allowed him to gather more information about the targeted company, the name of which was redacted by prosecutors.
The notebook highlighted that 'the target is insurance' because it 'checks every box,' as per the complaint.
Of particular concern was an entry referencing an investor conference attended by UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on the day of his killing. The notebook described the conference as a 'true windfall' and emphasized that 'the message becomes self-evident.'
Additionally, the complaint mentioned a separate letter addressed to 'The Feds,' in which Mangione asserted that he had acted alone and self-funded his activities. He detailed the methods used, including 'elementary social engineering, basic CAD, and a lot of patience.'
The revelations from the notebook and letter provide a glimpse into the mindset and planning of the suspect, offering valuable insights for investigators as they piece together the events leading up to the tragic incident.
