Fed-up Lanarkshire locals vow to stop paying bills as flat repairs drag on

Fed-up Lanarkshire locals have warned they could stop paying bills to South Lanarkshire Council in a bid to get the much-needed repair works finished.

Scaffolding has surrounded a property on Cambuslang's Main Street for over a year now, after masonry fell from the building in December 2020.

We recently told how residents living there were now desperate to see a solution to their problems, with repairs unable to get underway until an agreement is reached on who pays for them.

The flat owners are happy to stump up the money, but local businesses based there - who would be billed far greater sums - have not yet agreed to the terms.

That has left those living there paying hundreds of pounds to SLC, with the local authority charging them for the scaffolding they've assembled there for safety reasons.

One fed up resident told Lanarkshire Live : "It's several hundred pounds we're being charged with each bill.

"It's money that's just disappearing for us.

"There doesn't seem to be any progress being made about the actual repairs being made, so all we are doing is watching this money go away over and over again.

"It's so stressful - I've genuinely been considering just refusing to pay it.

"Maybe they'd take us to court about it, but at least it might make something happen. I wouldn't mind paying if we knew it was for the short term until repairs started, but we still don't know if that'll happen.

SLC's head of planning and economic development, Pauline Elliott, told us : “We have used the powers available to the council to ensure measures are in place for the safety of the public in and around the building.

"As these are private properties we would encourage all parties to work together to resolve this situation

"Our Building Standards Service continues to monitor and inspect the condition of the external front façade and may in the future instruct any further works necessary to ensure public safety."
