Fed-up Edinburgh West End businesses left with no internet for nearly a week

When they contacted Virgin Media to resolve the issue they were passed from the customer service team back to the technical team - time and time again with no solution offered.

Barrie Wilkins, managing director of MB Media based in the affected area explained the frustration and detrimental affect on not only his business but the small businesses such as Chop House, Black Ivy and the White Horse that the media company manages.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live the 36-year-old said: "We first contacted them last Wednesday when we noticed there was an issue, I as well as other businesses have been ringing constantly to be told there is no problem or passed from customer service to the technical team and vice versa.

"A van came out today but the Virgin Media engineer was walking about like a headless chicken he had no idea what was going on and left shortly after.

"We have been trying to contact Virgin to resolve the issue only to continuously be told there is no issue within the area and that there is nothing they can do.

"You can imagine the huge impact this is having financially on businesses within the area, unable to access till points, unable to take any calls to their landlines and most importantly unable to access services that they pay for.

"In light of the current climate we can't get any calls or get online to manage our clients websites, the Cambridge Bar can't take any bookings or access previous ones due to an online booking system and no customers are able to phone through."

The local business director continued: "We have had four members of staff today using the hotspot on their phones to do work. No one is taking the issue seriously at all."

The businesses are still trying to work without internet and are yet to find out when exactly the issue will be resolved.

A Virgin Media spokesperson said: “A fibre break has affected services for some customers in central Edinburgh.

"Our engineers have identified the location of the break and been working to repair the damaged fibres and restore services as quickly as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience and any frustration caused.”
