Fears for 'dream weddings' as hotel's future hangs in balance

Couples looking forward to their "dream weddings" face cancellations after fears a "wonderful business" could 'collapse'.

Thornton Manor in Wirral was ordered to remove three marquees by the UK Planning Inspectorate, which bosses say will have "huge consequences" for the business.

The marquees must be removed within six months, a decision the hotel's operator, Thornton Holdings, says would mean the company 'would default on its financial obligations.'

People across Merseyside have backed a petition set up by a C.Davies, who said action must be taken now to save the "beautiful venue".

The petition has already received over 1,600 signatures, with some branding Thornton Manor Wirral's "pride and joy".

Ms Davies, who did not wish for her first name to be published, is one of the hundreds of brides-to-be facing the potential cancellation of their big day if the marquees are removed.

She told the ECHO : "I'm supposed to be getting married in August which is past the six-month deadline. I've always wanted to get married there.

"I got engaged three years ago in the November before lockdown and it's the only place I've ever wanted to go. We would've got married sooner but because of covid we decided to wait.

"I can't envision having my wedding anywhere else, a lot of people can't. It was a genius idea and now the council want to take it away.

"When you're spending a lot of money on a wedding it is worrying. Hundreds of weddings have been booked so everyone will be up the wall.

She continued: "I don't want to travel, others won't either. It was perfect for us and I just wanted to do something because we need to show the council it's needed and wanted.

"If they go ahead with this, we will be back at square one trying to get deposits back from suppliers, it's an extra stress. And if the marquees go, they don't know if they can sustain the manor.

"The manor isn't guaranteed to be ok. There's hundreds of jobs on the line, people are undoubtedly worried."

Back in 2011, Wirral Council wrongly stated the venue could build the three marquees on green space within the estate, but this was not what the planning committee had agreed a year earlier.

The error was blamed on an IT failure.

A long-running dispute ended up in both the High Court and the Court of Appeal, with the UK Planning Inspectorate upholding the order to remove the three marquees.

After the decision, the company told the inspectorate an 'exit strategy' would need to be put in place to 'manage the collapse of the business.'

Ms Davies added: "Everyone has been through so much the last two years, some brides have had their weddings cancelled four or five times and they've waited because they didn't want to change venue.

"They will have to be removed during wedding season and it's not just people being let down, it's businesses and suppliers. It's messing around with so many people.

"They have four weddings a day in there, it's huge. I've been a couple of times in the last year and honestly, you wouldn't know. You don't see them.

"The grounds are so well looked after, I don't see why it's an issue now. Yes it was a mistake in the first place but there have been no problems.

"When I booked my wedding, I wasn't able to book my own DJ, I had to use their own specialist ones so they could control the volume of the music. They are strict on the rules so this just doesn't make any sense.

"They could say they worry about wildlife but the grounds are full of wildlife and they haven't been affected.

"I just think it's quite unfair and it's not just weddings, it's charity events. They even welcomed Boris Johnson a while back.

"Wirral is a small place, we don't have anything else. There's nowhere big enough to host large events. It just doesn't make sense."

Ms Davies said Wirral is being deprived of this beautiful venue and staff hope to hear more about what the future holds in the next four weeks.

She said: "Why deprive Wirral, and so many people of a venue in a beautiful location. The marquees are amazing, they are well looked after.

"Even if the council can give another year, it's better than nothing and it means the venue can get as many weddings done as they can."
