Fearful Rangers punters go from whispering to bellowing as bonkers Hotline sees demand for Ibrox anthem change

Rangers boss Gio van Bronckhorst faces a battle to hang on to his job but if the Hotline is any gauge of his chances then it's starting to look grim. There were one or two calls offering encouragement but the majority delivered a damning judgement on the Dutchman's reign.

Andy Scott, Edinburgh , emailed: " Rangers have been utterly hopeless in the Champions League and have deserved all the flak coming their way. It has had a knock-on effect on their domestic form, with a lack of confidence seeping through the entire squad. Having said this, they are still in with a shout of winning a treble in Scotland. One or two good results, a few players back from injury and it's game-on domestically. It should also be noted that the teams Rangers dispatched to reach the Champions league are going great guns in the Europa League."

Bud Hay, Dumfries, emailed: "What a difference a season makes with no Rangers fans bragging about the Europa League. Celtic can only lose the Premiership and could have it won by before Christmas. Dream on Rangers, they won't be playing Simply the Best at Ibrox, it'll be, Help, We Need Somebody."

Robert McEwan, Mount Vernon , emailed: "I had to laugh at Barry Ferguson saying Napoli are the hottest team in Europe at the moment. What about Real Madrid, Manchester City, PSG and Bayern Munich? It's those teams which reach the Champions League last four."

Jim McClean, Rothesay. emailed: "Rangers can still qualify for Europe, but do the supporters realise they have to win by five clear goals? It’s not just a win they need."

John Bruce, emailed: "Just about every Rangers fan must be wondering how our team has gone from being super-fit, unbeaten two seasons ago, then playing in a European final only five months ago; to now appearing unfit, lacking in confidence and playing truly awful football. Whilst Rangers' Champions League performances have also been dreadful and fully deserving of the criticism that has come both the team's and the manager's way, it beggars belief how Celtic can be given any praise after finishing bottom of yet another European group. Rangers still have one tiny slither of hope against Ajax. Stranger things have happened."

Arrin Geddes, Irvine, emailed: "Hotline caller George Wilson uses the words ironic and comical to describe Celtic in Europe while claiming Rangers are still in with a chance of qualifying for the Europa League. Technically, yes, but it will take a five goal defeat of Ajax from a team who UEFA stats say have had nine shots on target in their last five games, that's comedy gold."

John Scott, Grassmoor, emailed: "As I plod into my 60s I can't help but shake my head at the rubbish spouted about the Scottish game, especially from English ex-players who most of us would fail to recognise in the street. The money that Celtic and Rangers generate keeps both well ahead of their league competitors so it's little surprise they in turn struggle to compete with Europe's richest clubs. In fact it could be argued it's arrogant for us to expect them to.

We need to start the league earlier so we're up to speed and for heaven's sake give our small country the credit it deserves for the champions we produce across many other sports."

Gary Stevenson, Newtonhill , emailed: "It's back to Scottish football after a pathetic showing in Europe for our clubs. Rangers, Celtic, Hearts, Dundee United and Motherwell all out and Aberdeen, who failed to make the shortlist for the Eurovision Song Contest."

Neil Renton, Edinburgh, said: "The one positive from Hearts this season has been the performance of Lawrence Shankland. They’ll be struggling to keep a hold of him in the transfer window and I can see him going to a far bigger club like Hibs."

Alan Lough, Dunbar, emailed: "Ronaldo insults our intelligence again by declaring he is 'committed' to Manchester United. At least until the next time when Erik ten Hag shows him he isn't bigger than the club and he storms off home with his toys well and truly out the pram. Again."
