The Food and Drug Administration has issued its highest warning on a batch of eggs distributed to Costco stores in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina last month. The agency has stated that there is a 'reasonable possibility' that consuming these eggs could lead to 'serious adverse health consequences or death' due to potential salmonella exposure.
The affected product is the Handsome Brook Farms brand of Signature Organic Pasture-Raised 24-Count Eggs. Approximately 10,800 retail units were sent to 25 Costco locations starting November 22. The eggs were recalled on November 27 after it was discovered that eggs not meant for retail sale had been incorrectly packaged and distributed.
Following the initial recall, the FDA reclassified it to a Class 1 alert, indicating the highest level of concern. Handsome Brook Farms has taken steps to enhance supply chain controls and provide additional training to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The affected cartons can be identified by the numbers 327 and P1363, with a use-by date of January 5, 2025. Consumers are advised not to consume these eggs and are encouraged to return them to Costco for a full refund or dispose of them safely.
Salmonella infections can be severe, particularly for children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include fever, diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting, typically appearing within six hours to six days after infection and lasting for four to seven days. Those at higher risk, such as children under 5, seniors over 65, and individuals with compromised immune systems, may require medical attention or hospitalization if affected.
