FC Barcelona announced late on Monday evening in Europe that they have reached an agreement with Girona FC for the loan of player Oriol Romeu until 30 June 2025. Romeu joined Barca last summer after a successful campaign with Girona in 2022/23. Initially a key player in the team, Romeu's playing time decreased as the season progressed due to a knee injury, making 37 appearances in total, 17 as a starter for FC Barcelona.
Romeu's departure had been anticipated since Friday, with reports suggesting a return to his former club on loan or a permanent transfer. Barca confirmed the move, which will initially be for a season, with no details yet on a potential permanent transfer option for Girona.
Barca had acquired Romeu for around $4.4 million (€4 million) as a replacement for Sergio Busquets, who had moved to Inter Miami. Despite missing out on other targets, Romeu started well under Xavi Hernandez but struggled with injuries and form, leading to the loan move to Girona.
Romeu's move to Girona offers him the opportunity to play in the Champions League for the first time in the club's history in the 2024/2025 season. This transfer signifies a new chapter for the midfielder as he aims to regain his form and confidence at his former club.
