FBI Report: Open Spaces Most Targeted In 2023 Shootings

The Federal Bureau of Investigation seal is seen at FBI headquarters in Washington

A recent report released by the FBI sheds light on the occurrences of 'active shooter incidents' in the United States in 2023, revealing concerning trends and statistics. The report indicates that open spaces, such as roads, neighborhoods, parks, and outdoor venues, were the primary locations where victims were targeted in these tragic events.

According to federal investigators, there were a total of 48 active shooter incidents reported last year, spanning across 26 states. These incidents resulted in 105 fatalities and 139 injuries, underscoring the devastating impact of such violence on communities.

California, known for its stringent gun control laws, recorded the highest number of incidents with eight, followed by Texas and Washington state, each reporting four incidents.

The FBI defines an active shooter as 'one or more individuals actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area.' The majority of incidents in 2023, 28 in total, occurred in open spaces, while 14 took place in commerce settings, three in educational institutions, two in healthcare facilities, and one in a residential area.

One of the most tragic incidents of the year unfolded on October 25, when a gunman claimed the lives of 18 individuals at a bowling alley and bar in Lewiston, Maine, before taking his own life two days later.

The report also provides insights into the demographics of the perpetrators involved in these incidents. Of the 49 shooters identified in 2023, all but one were male. The age range of the perpetrators spanned from 17 to 72 years old, with handguns being the most commonly used weapons (43 incidents), followed by rifles (16 incidents) and shotguns (one incident).

The FBI emphasizes that the release of this report aims to enhance the understanding of active shooter incidents among law enforcement, first responders, and the general public. Despite a slight decrease in incidents from the previous year, the overall number of active shooter incidents has seen a significant 60% increase since 2019.

From 2019 to 2023, the FBI documented a total of 229 active shooter incidents, marking an 89% rise compared to the preceding five-year period (2014–2018). These statistics underscore the urgent need for continued efforts to address and prevent such tragic events in the future.
