An attorney representing a group of FBI employees has raised concerns about the Trump administration's plan to release the names of individuals who worked on cases related to the January 6, 2021, US Capitol riot. The attorney stated that workers within the agency fear potential job loss and the safety of themselves and their families.
The attorney emphasized that the release of such information could make FBI employees targets for malicious actors, both domestic and international. The group, represented by the attorney, filed a class-action complaint accusing the Justice Department of violating the Constitution and privacy laws by requesting agents to complete a survey aimed at identifying personnel involved in Trump-related investigations.
The attorney highlighted that FBI agents do not have the luxury of choosing their assignments based on political reasons and should not be disturbed by such demands. The concern stems from past statements made by Donald Trump during his campaign, where he hinted at retribution and vengeance, particularly in cases related to the January 6 incident.
Since the lawsuit was filed, 18 additional agents have reportedly reached out to the attorney, expressing their worries about the situation. The attorney's efforts are focused on protecting the privacy and safety of FBI employees while questioning the legitimate reasons behind the administration's push to aggregate this sensitive information.
