FBI Director Christopher Wray recently addressed concerns about threats of violence related to heated protests on college campuses. In an interview with NBC News, Wray emphasized that the FBI does not typically involve itself in demonstrations but becomes concerned when violence occurs.
Wray highlighted a significant increase in antisemitic threats and violence, particularly following the Oct. 7 attack on Israel by Hamas. He expressed alarm at the rising number of such incidents since that date.
Protests on college campuses, which initially surged after the Oct. 7 attack, experienced a resurgence last week after a period of relative calm. The intensity of these demonstrations led to the arrest of hundreds of protesters at Columbia and New York universities.
School administrators faced criticism for allegedly failing to take adequate measures to ensure the safety of Jewish students amidst the escalating tensions. Wray clarified that while the FBI does not actively monitor protests, it does collaborate with campuses, as well as state and local law enforcement agencies, to share intelligence on specific threats of violence.
