The explosion, which occurred on Aug. 8, involved a 7-inch by 4-inch cylinder-shaped IED that had been placed in a trash receptacle and detonated, injuring a passing vehicle driver.
Witnesses described the explosion as extremely loud and impactful, with the vehicle sustaining significant damage from the blast. Several other IEDs have been discovered and safely collected by authorities along roadways between Kahului and Kula. These devices vary in shape and size, posing a potential threat to public safety.
The FBI and Maui Police Department are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, especially if it involves unattended objects in public spaces. If individuals encounter any unknown objects, particularly near streets or roads, they are advised not to touch or approach them and to immediately contact 911.
Forensic analysis is underway to determine the configuration of the IEDs and how they were intended to detonate. The FBI has cautioned that these devices may resemble small, makeshift baskets, making them potentially difficult to identify.
