The Fayette County School System, in conjunction with Bluegrass Community and Technical College and Eastern Kentucky University, is significantly expanding dual credit opportunities. The formal announcement came Monday.
Beginning this summer, any Fayette County Public high school student can take a dual credit course at B-C-T-C free. Rising juniors and seniors can find one free dual credit class and others at a reduced cost at EKU. Fayette Schools Superintendent Demetrus Liggins said this program could benefit first-generation college students.
“Previously we’ve really pushed getting one or two college courses, just to get your feet wet so to speak. So, now, we’re pushing let’s go the extra mile. You can actually receive an associate’s degree by the time you’re done,” said Liggins.
Megan Bullock, who attends the STEAM Academy, is about to graduate with an associate degree from B-C-T-C. She said she has a lot of college ahead of her and this program will reduce that time. The Fayette County School Board is backing the dual credit expansion with a $3.5 million investment.
Joiner Jikang attends Opportunity Middle College, housed at B-C-T-C. She said the experience provides preparation in many areas.
“Not just about college but kind of about like entering a professional world. You know, they teach you some things in high school about preparation for that, but it’s like experiencing it on your own is really helpful,” said Jikang.
Another participant, Isaiah Cruz noted it saves two years in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree. He added it saves a lot of money. Superintendent Demetrus Liggins said there are eight students graduating with an Associate’s degree. He would like to see that rise to about a hundred. Aaron Baker with EKU Dual Credit and Transition Services said the hope is to see this type of program expand to other counties.
