FAW say they weren't asked for permission to be in Penny Mordaunt's controversial Tory leadership campaign video

The Football Association of Wales have confirmed they were not consulted before being included in a promotional campaign for the Conservative party.

A three-minute video posted by Penny Mordaunt - MP for Portsmouth North - on social media attracted plenty of attention from Wales fans, among others. The clip cites the need for leadership of the party to change amid the turmoil surrounding Boris Johnson who is set to resign as Prime Minister once a successor is found to replace him. Mordaunt is one of a long list of Conservative party hopefuls looking to succeed Johnson.

A minute in to the video, footage of Wales boss Rob Page celebrating with his coaching staff from last month's 1-0 win over Ukraine - a result that earned the Red Dragons a place at this year's World Cup in Qatar - is shown.

It prompted Wales supporter Patrick O'Donnell to ask if the FAW had been asked if they wanted to feature in the promotional video. "Hi @Cymru @FAWales @NoelMooney13, Wales' win against Ukraine appears in this video at 1:05, were the FAW asked to be included in the video, and if you were, did you agree to be in the video?" he asked.

But FAW CEO Noel Mooney simply wrote "No!" in response to the question. The FAW have been approached for comment.

Footage of athlete Jonnie Peacock competing in the 2012 Paralympics in London is also shown in the video, with Peacock taking to Twitter to ask for his inclusion to be removed. "I officially request to be removed from this video…. Anything but blue please," he wrote.

Rishi Sunak is the current favourite with bookmakers to be named the next Prime Minister.

Wales begin their World Cup campaign against the United States of America on November 21. They then face Iran on November 25 before rounding off the group stage of the competition against England four days later.
